Dr. David Wood is the Chief Scientific Officer of the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute (DCI) and Director of the Centre for Structural Heart Disease Interventions, the UBC Centre for Cardiovascular Innovation (CCI), and the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at VGH. He is a professor of medicine and head of cardiology at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) Hospital. He also practises as a structural and interventional cardiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital and VGH.
Dr. Wood obtained his medical degree from UBC before completing residencies in internal medicine and cardiology, serving as Chief Resident in both programs. He subsequently pursued subspecialty training at the Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute in New York.
His primary research interests include the transcatheter management of structural and valvular heart disease, new device development, novel strategies for treating acute coronary syndrome, and advanced cardiac imaging. He has participated in more than 50 live cases and 20 first-in-human cases and has co-authored more than 200 publications.
In 2019, Dr. Wood published the 3M TAVR Study and the SAFE MANTA Study. He was also co-principal investigator of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded COMPLETE trial, which was presented as Late Breaking Science at ESC 2019 and TCT 2019, with simultaneous publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. He secured funding for COMPLETE TAVR, an international randomized controlled trial designed to determine the optimal strategy for managing concomitant coronary artery disease in patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis.
Dr. Wood’s professional leadership includes serving as president of the Canadian Association of Interventional Cardiology (CAIC-ACCI). In 2019, he established the CAIC-ACCI Summit, a two-day national meeting providing an open Canadian forum to discuss controversies in complex coronary and structural heart disease interventions. His contributions have been recognized with the Luminary Award at the C3 Global Summit.
