Dr. Teresa Tsang is the Director of the Centre for AI, Data Science, Imaging, and Precision Medicine at the Dilawri Cardiovascular Institute (DCI). She is a cardiologist, echocardiographer, clinician-scientist and Professor of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC). She also serves as Executive Lead and Scientific Director of the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI) AI Hub and directs the VGH-UBC Echocardiography Laboratory and AI Echo Core Lab. In 2026, she serves as Vice President of the Canadian Society of Echocardiography.
Dr. Tsang received her medical degree and completed training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Alberta. Supported by Medical Research Council of Canada and Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research awards, she pursued a clinical epidemiology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. She subsequently completed an advanced echocardiography fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she joined the cardiology staff and became a tenured Professor before being recruited to UBC.
Her multidisciplinary research integrates cardiovascular imaging, artificial intelligence, genomics, biomarkers and population health to advance early disease detection, personalized prevention and treatment. Her team develops and validates AI tools for imaging quality assessment, automated interpretation, and the detection of early changes in heart structure and function. By combining imaging with genomic, clinical and longitudinal health data, her research aims to improve risk prediction for conditions including atrial fibrillation, heart failure and stroke.
Dr. Tsang is the principal investigator of MOSAIC, a precision health initiative linking echocardiography, whole-genome sequencing and health data across British Columbia and Yukon. She also leads VECTOR (Variants Evaluated for Cardiometabolic and Pharmacogenomic Tiers Of Risk), which integrates genomic data, cardiac imaging and longitudinal health information through Health Data Platform BC to evaluate how genetic information can guide risk assessment and treatment at the point of care. Her research portfolio also includes INFUSE and the echocardiography sub-study of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, establishing a national platform for investigating cardiovascular aging and disease. Her programs have received support from Genome Canada, Genome BC, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Under her leadership, the VGH-UBC Echocardiography Laboratory—the largest echocardiography program in British Columbia—serves as a national and international training hub. Through the VCHRI AI Hub, supported by Canada Foundation for Innovation infrastructure funding, she brings together clinicians, researchers, engineers, health system partners, industry and communities to develop and evaluate practical AI applications for care and research.
Dr. Tsang is committed to expanding access to cardiovascular imaging and precision health tools, particularly for rural, remote, Indigenous and underserved communities. Her work emphasizes responsible use of health data, respect for Indigenous data sovereignty and meaningful community participation. As a mentor to clinician-scientists, engineers and trainees across disciplines, she supports collaboration that translates research discoveries into accessible, equitable and personalized care throughout British Columbia and beyond.
